When you learn how to communicate effectively, you equip yourself to assert your needs in any given situation, whether at work, college, or in your personal life. Learning how to speak with confidence, first and foremost, begins with building confidence as a woman, empowering you to thrive in any environment.

What Barriers Do Young Women Face to Effective Communication?

There are two types of barriers to effective communication that young women face at work, in college, and in daily life: internal and external barriers. Fear of judgment, self-doubt, or perfectionism are categorized as internal barriers that prevent you from expressing your thoughts confidently, even when you know you have valuable insights to offer. In these instances, you may hesitate because you are worried about how people might perceive you. Whether you may have a few ideas on how to be more confident or not, your main struggle is advocating for yourself. Effective communication lies in knowing how to speak with confidence.  

External barriers show up in workplaces, classroom dynamics, societal expectations, and pressure to perform in group settings. We know how quickly we are labeled as “bossy” or “selfish” just for asserting ourselves, which can make building confidence as a woman feel even more daunting. Societal expectations to perform and conform do not do us any favors either, as we are expected to uphold the status quo and shoulder heavy baggage that is not ours. United Way, a nonprofit based in Washington, D.C., reports that from a young age, boys are encouraged to be assertive and competitive. Young girls, on the other hand, are steered toward nurturing and compliance. By a show of hands, how many of us relate to being interrupted, ignored, or dismissed during conversations? We begin thinking, I just don’t know how to be more confident in myself. I need to do better. You may have heard to treat others how you want to be treated. Here, you are putting it into action. Through active listening, you are modeling appropriate behavior to show someone what behaviors and actions you will accept. This is an important step in knowing how to be more confident.

Assertive (Not Aggressive) Language: Exploring how to speak with confidence is about how you choose to express your thoughts. Assertion looks like speaking up for yourself by calmly saying what you are thinking, clarifying work expectations, and respectfully disagreeing in the classroom. You are telling the other person what you need through direct communication. In honoring your point of view, you are building confidence as a woman. You don’t have to take the high road and be the bigger person if it means staying silent and apologizing for your feelings. Assertion is an effective communication skill every woman should learn because your frustration is justified. When you master how to improve communication skills, you are boosting confidence, fostering personal growth, and strengthening relationships.

Non-Verbal Cues: These cues involve tone, posture, and facial expressions, which collectively impact the effectiveness of your message. Depending on the severity of the situation, do you choose to stand up straight or slouch, maintain eye contact, and speak at a steady pace? Non-verbal cues matter and can be just the push you need to be more confident, even if you are feeling anxious inside. 

Regulating Emotions: Regulating your emotions during disputes is one of the largest and hardest pillars of effective communication. It often takes years of mindful practice to truly regulate emotions during an emotionally charged conversation. Managing your emotions starts with pausing when making your point, taking a step back, and staying grounded. It is not easy when you are attempting to find solutions, but the other person might be looking for a fight. Tensions get the best of us, and we end up snapping. At moments like this, ask yourself: are my own actions aligned with the confident woman I aspire to be?

Following the steps above can boost your confidence as a woman and resolve conflicts. Developing effective communication skills helps you express yourself in a way that is true to yourself and ensures your voice is heard.

Practice Practical Strategies

As I have mentioned, mindful practice is key to building effective communication skills. Begin practicing in low-stakes situations with friends and peers you trust. You can role-play conversations you’re nervous about and prepare your responses to workplace or classroom disagreements in advance, enabling you to speak with confidence in real-life contexts. When you find yourself freezing up: slow your breathing, relax your shoulders, and adjust your body language as you slowly learn how to be more confident when you talk. Putting yourself through practice strengthens your ability to handle criticisms and conflict as they come.

Being confident women means giving ourselves the right to express our feelings, whether it be frustration, annoyance, or pure anger. Holding in your thoughts or replaying conversations in your head is not serving you. Add learning how to communicate effectively to your bucket list, and you’ll find yourself feeling less stressed.
